Top 10 Reasons I Love My Job

10. You really can't beat the hours, Mon-Fri 10-2, seriously these are the best hours I've ever had with a job. They're regular every week (unless I'm going on a shoot, which is even more fun), and I finally have a scheduled out time. If you've read my other blog, you'll understand how happy that makes me. :)

9. Our kids show is in 182 TV stations across the country (which includes Guam and the Virgin Islands), we're up to over 350 kids club members (with like 10 more sitting in my inbox waiting to be registered), and we'll be submitting an episode for an Emmy nomination, so we're kind of famous.

8. There are fish, sharks, dolphins, and other marine animals all over the office decorating it. There are also two fish tanks and a parrot that live here. This is even better than actually becoming a marine biologist (which was what I wanted to do when I was little) because I didn't have to take all those math classes. I work for a company that loves the environment and wants to help save it, while making videos and short films (which is what I went to school for), how is this not the best of both worlds?

7. "Thank you, Jeanne" - I can't seem to hear it enough. Excluding karate and summer camp as those have been fun jobs that I've enjoyed, I never heard that phrase uttered unless I had done something completely above and beyond the call of duty (like clean up puke). I never heard it on a daily basis or for simple things. I hear it all the time now, from multiple people and it's awesome.

6. I've been in the office when the boss has decided that it's "Beer O'Clock" and made a liquor store run, while we're all still on the clock and working! He brought me back a mini bottle of vodka, I <3 vodka, especially while working :)

5. This is the only job I've had where we've held a movie night after-hours :)

4. I'm actually given responsibilities and duties. I'm also given more when I show that I can get things done. I've gone from basic office assistant stuff (bank and post office runs) to managing/supervising the kids club and now assistant editor, with editor being the next step up. They also have me doing camera work on my own now, which is not really what I want to do but they know this and cut me some slack.

3. The following two conversations from two of our interns (who were also classmates of mine):
Dan: I'm going to call you Matty.
Matt: Okay, I'm going to call you Stephanie.
Dan: But that doesn't make any sense!
Matt: So what? Stephanie.

Matt: I'm going to headbutt you.
Dan: It's too early in the morning for that.
Matt: A headbutt? It's never too early for a good headbutt.

2. I get to do things, or learn things, or see things I might never have done/learned/seen otherwise. I got to interview a guy who doesn't have his large intestine and he's going to climb Mt. Everest. I taped auditions for a nationwide casting call for Macy's. I'm behind the scenes for two different tv shows (ours and one the MTA does). I'll be going on the next shoot for the kids show in New York and probably the one after that in North Carolina to release some Sea Turtles. I had never played with a parrot before.

1. No matter how boring the shoot is, or how long it is, no matter how hot or cold, rainy or sunny, after every shoot (and even during the shoot most of the time) I can look back and see how much I enjoy it. I can see that I'm right where I want to be, I'm where I'm suppose to be. I picked the right major and I'm putting my degree to work and I couldn't be happier. Several people have told me how few actually either a) pursue a major they like or b) get a job related to their degree after college and that mystifies me. I couldn't imagine doing a job I didn't like from 9 to 5 (or whatever) for twenty to thirty years. I don't know how some people can get degrees in fields they don't even like or pick a major they like then don't do anything with it. It just boggles my mind.

I learn something new on almost every new shoot and I love it. I love that I'm I'm working in a professional, respectful, yet somehow absurdly goofy environment that I wouldn't trade for the world. I would work there for free, and I have, so the paycheck is icing on the cake. It's a job, but it's not work. There's work involved, but I don't dread going to the office every day. I'm not a fan of the getting up fairly early in the morning, but if that's the only downside then I have got it good. I just can't get over how much I love this job. I've almost always had jobs that I hated or mildly disliked. I've always had days where I just didn't want to go to work and deal with whoever it was that I had to deal with. Not this job. I have not had a day yet where I've thought/said "I really don't want to go to work today." I'm sure it's coming up eventually, it's not going to be great all of the time, but it hasn't yet and that is a first for me. I love my job. I love the people I work with. I love what I do. It's exactly what I hoped I would find after college but didn't think it would actually happen and I couldn't be any happier about it. :)
